After viewing the video, answer these few questions to evaluate your reformation lens:
- Genesis 3 introduces a character who is called a serpent and who invites Eve into a conversation at the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Later in scripture, in a passage referring to the garden event, this serpent is identified to be a cherubim (Ezekiel 28:14). The serpent was an angel who was an important figure in the hierarchy of the angels. Eve did not seem to be startled that an angel was giving her advice at this tree, which was a source of knowledge. Perhaps she had some understanding that the human family and the angelic family were both created to participate as council members. At that event at the tree, a representative from the human family and a representative from the angelic family gathered as members of the council. But the chief authority, the head of the council, the Lord, was not present. Do you think that information can be delivered to humans from beings that are from the spiritual realm? Can communications from the ethereal realm always be trusted just because they are supernatural in origin? Give some examples of types of spiritual communication that are forbidden in the Bible.
- Eve was judged for taking counsel from the serpent because his counsel was contrary to the Word of the Lord. Think about your ability to make decisions and reflect upon the sources of the information you use in making your decisions. Do you use the Bible as the main source of your knowledge? Have you ever gone to the supernatural realm to get information? Do you know a bible story where someone turned to sorcery, incantations, idolatry, witchcraft, or any such divinations to obtain knowledge? Compare the story about which you are thinking with the story of Eve and the serpent. What parallels can you draw, what warning can you see, and what wisdom can you glean from the comparisons?
- Evil began in the earth when the serpent, who is later in scripture identified to be the devil, and when the first couple chose to disobey God and chose to do contrary to God’s Word. Freedom to choose is a powerful gift that God gave to the angels and to humanity. Why do you think God did not override their choices? When you see or experience evil in this world, do you tend to blame God for not eliminating the evil? If God did eliminate all evil that is done by man and done by the devil, God would be eliminating the freedom to choose. Would you prefer to live as a preprogrammed being without volition? If God’s choice was to make you free to give and receive love of friends and family, He also made you free to love or not love Him and to obey or not obey Him. Would you be more accurate to blame evil on people and the devil than to blame it on God? If so, are you encouraged to know that God justly and in due season deals with all evil and that the whole created order ends with all creation at peace and in right relationship with the Lord?
